It is now high summer and the union of Sun and Earth, of God and Goddess, has produced the First Harvest. Lammas is the celebration of this first, Grain Harvest, a time for gathering in and giving thanks for abundance. We work with the cycle that Mabon or the Autumn Equinox is the Second Harvest of Fruit, and Samhain is the third and Final Harvest of Nuts and Berries.
The goddess Demeter is associated with this festival.
Lammas is the season of the grain harvest. It’s the time when the fields are rolling with golden waves of wheat, tall green stalks of corn. If you live in a rural area, it’s a kind of magical time, as farmers tend to their fields to harvest what was sown in the spring. For many of us, grain is a significant part of our diet. Use this simple prayer to the grain fields as a way of acknowledging the season.
Prayer for the Grain
Fields of gold, waves of grain, the summer comes to a close. The harvest is ready, ripe for threshing,as the sun fades into autumn.Flour will be milled, bread will be baked, and we shall eat for another winter.
